Ross Island and Mt. Erebus as seen from Pegasus ice runway, ~10 miles across McMurdo Sound. McMurdo Station is located on the left-hand side of Hut Point Penninsula, which is the black area (basalt) at the base of the volcano. Observation Hill is the small cone-shaped feature near the right of the penninsula. The small, isolated peak of black rock behind the exposed area of the penninsula is Castle Rock. A plume of steam can be seen coming from the summit of Mt. Erebus.
