How Far Have We Come? A Brief History of the Nuclear Force

A brief history of the nuclear force is presented, with an emphasis on the underlying principles and (broken) symmetries. Selected examples of important milestones in that history will be discussed, together with my personal assessment of what has been accomplished and what remains to be done. Topics include: few-nucleon systems, three-nucleon forces, field theory as an essential ingredient, isospin, space-time symmetries, SU(4) symmetry, and chiral symmetry.
