Three separate troughs between Greenland and the British Isles allow cold, saline water to overflow from the Nordic Sea into the depths of the N. Atlantic. How these under-sea rivers mix with the warmer water of the open ocean is still poorly understood and of critical importance to making accurate long-range predictions about our global climate.
