Our friends Claude (right) and Christian (left); French researchers who also spoke Russian and (thankfully) English, and who without, we would have had a very difficult stay (almost none of the Russians spoke English, but some could speak French). At the right of the photo, next to Claude is a new probe they were planning to use to log temperatures within the core hole.
