Opportunity for Undergraduate Research (home)
I welcome the opportunity to mentor students at any stage in their studies. Each topic I have listed under my "Research Interests" is accessible to undergraduates, graduates, and postdocs. All of the funding opportunities listed below are very competitive, so students need to be motivated in order to put together winning applications.
Undergraduate Student Programs
The Center of Nonlinear Studies invites a limited number of undergraduates to LANL each summer. This program provides a great chance "try out" research in the setting of a national laboratory during undergraduate studies.
The Department of Energy sponsors undergraduate summer research projects through the SURE component of the Global Change Education Program (GCEP). I am a mentor in GCEP. While my research abstract focuses on my interests on regional climate impacts in the Southwest United States, project ideas on any aspect of global climate modeling are welcome. A graduate student in GCEP has both a laboratory mentor and a university mentor. Students interested in the participating in the SURE program should contract me directly.
The Department of Energy also sponsors the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI). The paid-internship program matches scientists at LANL to motivated undergraduates who wish to explore research topics in the areas of natural science, engineering, mathematics, or computer science. Any of my "Research Interest" topics are appropriate for this internship program. Students interested in the participating in the SULI program should contract me directly.
