Opportunities for Post Doctoral Research (home)
I welcome the opportunity to mentor students at any stage in their studies. Each of the topics I have listed under "Research Interests" is accessible to undergraduates, graduates, and postdocs. All of the funding opportunities listed below are very competitive, so students need to be motivated in order to put together winning applications.
Postdoc Fellowship Programs
Los Alamos National Laboratory has a number of postdoc fellowship programs. These programs are designed to attract the most talented students from around the world. The positions are for two to year years, and a significant fraction of these fellowships are converted to permanent positions.
The Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) has a program for postdoc support. Since the student generally has both a laboratory mentor and a university mentor, this program provides a great opportunity for students to explore research in a national laboratory setting while maintaining strong ties to the university community. One of the primary focuses of IGPP is complex dynamical systems with a heavy emphasis on abrupt change related to atmosphere-ocean systems. University faculty who would like to sponsor a postdoc through IGPP should feel free to contract me.
The Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship program focuses on observing, understanding, modeling, and predicting the climate system on seasonal to centennial time scales and assessing the regionally specific socioeconomic consequences of climate variability. Successful applications to this program are generally developed jointly between the student and the host. Since my research interests are strongly reflected in the focus of this program, I welcome perspective students to contact me regarding research possibilities.
NSF also sponsors Postdoctoral Fellowships in Polar Regions Research program. The overlap between that program and my research interests is limited to the topic of regional climate modeling of polar areas. Other COSIM members have research programs that more broadly fit this postdoc program.
