Opportunities for Graduate Research (home)
I welcome the opportunity to mentor students at any stage in their studies. Each of the topics I have listed under "Research Interests" is accessible to undergraduates, graduates, and postdocs. All of the funding opportunities listed below are very competitive, so students need to be motivated in order to put together winning applications.
Graduate Student Programs
The Center of Nonlinear Studies invites graduate students to conduct research at LANL each summer. This program provide a great opportunity to conduct research in the setting of a national laboratory during graduate studies. Many graduates students visit LANL each summer to conduct research. In fact, so many arrive each summer that housing is hard to find by April. It is a good idea to apply early.
The Department of Energy sponsors graduate fellowships through the Global Change Education Program (GCEP). I am a mentor in GCEP. While my research abstract focuses on my interests on regional climate impacts in the Southwest United States, project ideas on any aspect of global climate modeling are welcome. A graduate student in GCEP has both a laboratory mentor and a university mentor. University faculty who would like to sponsor a graduate student through GCEP should feel free to contract me.
The Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) has a program for graduate student support. Similar to the GCEP program, the student has both a laboratory mentor and a university mentor. One of the primary focuses of IGPP is complex dynamical systems with a heavy emphasis on abrupt change related to atmosphere-ocean systems. University faculty who would like to sponsor a graduate student through IGPP should feel free to contract me.
Graduate students interested in high-performance computing might also consider the Computational Science Graduate Fellowship program. The overlap between this program and interests at LANL is substantial. Of particular relevance are the areas of computational fluid dynamics and earth and environmental sciences.
