Los Alamos, in northern New Mexico, sits on the Pajarito (pa-ha-ree-toe;
little bird) Plateau between the Jemez Mountains to the west and the Rio
Grande to the east. Adjacent to the Lab is Bandelier National Monument (for
more info: NPService-Bandelier or
NPFoundation-Bandelier).
This site, occupied by the Anasazi Indians betweeen 1075 and 1600 AD, was
named after Adolf Bandelier who pioneered the research on this site during
an expedition to New Mexico between 1880-1889.

Mesa Verde National Park, a 3 hour drive from the Lab in Colorado, was
established by Congress on September 29, 1906. Mesa Verde-Spanish for "Green
Table"-is the first national park set aside to preserve the works of
man (Anasazi, 600-1300AD).
